Know Your Rights and Obligations About Relocations

If any kind of parenting plan is in effect, Washington State requires that parents provide proper notification any time they wish to move the child out of the school district or county. The parent requesting the move must notify the other parent within 60 days of the proposed move. If the other parent wishes to challenge the relocation, an objection must be filed with the court within 30 days of receiving notification of the proposed move.

Once the objection has been filed, the relocation cannot occur until the matter is heard by the family court and an order is made approving or denying the relocation. If modifications are necessary to existing parenting schedules, the court must carefully consider what is in the best interests of the children.
